The methods to detect HBV basal core promoter (BCP) A1762T/G1764A mutations, precore stop codon G1896A mutation and pre-S deletion were performed as previously described. If necessary, the whole HBV pre-S/S gene was sequenced to search for mutations at the "a" determinants.
