The triple mutant rtV173L plus rtL180M plus rtM204V seen in two individuals with genotype A HBV infection causes concomitant amino acid substitutions at positions 164 and 195 (sE164D plus sI195M) in the HBsAg protein as a result of the overlapping reading frames of the envelope and polymerase genes.
